The maths
How to calculate hours and minutes between two times
- Same day: end time minus start time. 8:55 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours 35 minutes.
- Past midnight: add 24 hours to the end time first. 10 PM to 6 AM is 8 hours.
- With a break: take the break off. 8:55 to 5:30 with a 30-minute lunch is 8 hours 5 minutes.
- Adding time: add the minutes, carry each 60 over as an hour. 2:45 + 1:30 = 4:15.
- Decimal hours: minutes ÷ 60. 8 hours 5 minutes is 8.08 hours.
For a full work week with overtime and a printable time card, use the time card calculator.

How do I calculate the hours between two times?
Subtract the start time from the end time. If the end is earlier than the start, the shift went past midnight, so add 24 hours first. Then take off any break. This hours calculator does it as you type.
How many hours is 9 to 5?
9 AM to 5 PM is 8 hours. With a 30-minute unpaid lunch it is 7 hours 30 minutes, or 7.5 hours. With an hour for lunch it is 7 hours.
How do I add hours and minutes together?
Add the minutes, carry every 60 minutes over as 1 hour, then add the hours. 2:45 plus 1:30 is 3 hours and 75 minutes, which is 4:15. Choose Add up time to do it for a whole list, and switch a row to minus to subtract.
How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the hours. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 hours. Payroll and invoices use decimal hours because they multiply by an hourly rate.
Does it work with 24-hour (military) time?
Yes. Type 17:30 or 1730 and it is read as 5:30 PM. You can also type 5pm, 5:30p or just 5.
What is the difference between this and a time card calculator?
This one works on any list of times. The time card calculator is laid out as a work week, Monday to Sunday, with overtime rules and a printable time card for one week or two.
Is the hours calculator free, and are my times saved?
It is free with no sign-up. Your rows are kept in your browser on this device so they are still here when you come back. Nothing is sent to WeBoss.
